Transmission of Data Across Networks: Packet Headers and Encapsulation
To allow a packet of data to be transmitted over a network, it needs two pieces identifying information: the Media Access Control Address (MAC), and the Internet Protocol Protocol (IP) addresses. The MAC address, which is a uniquely assigned identifier to every computer or node on a local network (LAN), allows for data exchange and communication. An IP address is the unique number assigned to a particular node on a network. This information allows a packet of data to be transmitted to the right node in a network. A simple example would show how packet headers (encapsulation) and the process of transmitting packets. The message data in an email is first broken down into manageable parts. Next, each piece is assigned a packet head, which contains the destination and source IP addresses as well as the MAC addresses. The packet header can then be encapsulated (or filled with additional information) to ensure that the message is securely transmitted over the network. It is used to route packets through networks. The packet header is used to break down the packet into smaller pieces that can then be sent to routers closer to their destination. Once it has reached its destination, each piece will need to be reassembled (Wafa 2020). This ensures the packet header is used to send the data to its intended destination. The encapsulation also protects the data during transit. The packet header and the IP address of a host on the network are required for a packet of data to travel across the network.
