Before Arizona gained statehood, some of my favorite stories about Arizona include how the country became part of the United States and how the state capital, Phoenix, was formed. Before the Civil War, the Gadsden Purchase expanded the territory of the United States to include lands later identified as Arizona. The Hohokams set out to develop structure and a thriving community for the residents along the Gila River. This suggests that the area, although desert, is arable due to irrigation. As the Mexican-American War drew to a close in 1843, the United States agreed to pay $15 million for 500,000 square miles of Mexican territory as part of its annexation of Texas. However, the process of acquiring the Arizona Territory continued between 1848 and 1863, with Fort Whipple becoming the first capital of the Arizona Territory. Nonetheless, the capital of the Arizona Territory was later assigned to Prescott for several years before moving to Tucson. The Arizona Center reported that the capital was moved to Prescott in 1877 and then to Phoenix in 1889 (azcentral.com, 2015).
The city of Phoenix was founded in 1868 when adventurous commoner Jack Swerling organized a trail to the old Hohokam Canal in Arizona to irrigate farmland in the Salt River Valley and chose a name for the community. The Yavapai County Board of Trustees officially recognized Phoenix in 1868 and was incorporated in 1881. On May 7, 1901, President William McKinley and members of his cabinet visited Phoenix. Arizona is known for its valuable gold mining and agricultural industries. The construction of the Nevada Railroad through the Arizona Territory opened up more opportunities for trade and tourism in the region. Construction of the Roosevelt Dam in 1911 improved agriculture. Due to the economic strength of Arizona and the solid legislative structure it has created, it has popularized the Arizona region (McClory, 2010). Therefore, state capital grows due to economic activity……
