CSMA/CD Protocol

Carrier Sense Multiple Access/ Collision Detection Protocol (CSMA/CD), is a protocol for media access control in local area networks. It’s used to detect and block traffic between computers. The protocol allows multiple computers to use the same channel to send data.   When a machine “listens” for traffic on the channel and determines that it is free, it “senses” the channel and transmits the packet. If two or more machines sense the same channel and transmit at the same time, a “collision” occurs (Lawrence, 2015). Once a collision occurs, sending machines send their packets again until the transmission is successful. This can lead to network congestion and poor performance (Dillon and colleagues, 2019).  CSMA/CD, one of the oldest protocols for local area networks, is still being used today. While it’s reliable and straightforward to use, it can only adjust to how many computers are connected (Lee, 2021).  CSMA/CD, a medium access layer protocol that is still being used today, is very reliable and simple to implement.
