What is the difference between DoS attacks and DDoS attacks?
Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS), and Denial of Service attack (DoS), are two common methods used by malign actors to cripple the target server, network, or system. (Khan 2020). Both of these attacks are organized with the purpose of hindering the availability and access of their victims’ services, resources, or system. DDoS, however, differs in some aspects. These include their operating method. DDoS attack is organized through combining traffic from multiple sources, either by utilizing several infected computers connected to the internet, called “zombies” (Rouse, 2015), to launch the attack simultaneously, or with the help of a botnet which is a collection of encrypted networks of the aforementioned compromised systems. The collective power of these sources is then unleashed to overwhelm the target network’s existing resources and consequently cut off the user access to its environment. DoS attacks on the other side are often carried out using a single source of power. One source can create a flood of false requests that could inundate the target system with countless fake requests. DDoS may only use one attack tool or method, while DoS can employ multiple tools and methods which run simultaneously. In short, both of the attacks are designed to limit their victim’s access to the system resources and services, but DDoS attack uses multiple sources and tools to make this happen, whereas DoS attacks use single attack tools or a single system to interfere with or prevent access to a website, network or a service (Khan et al., 2021).
