Climate affects the types of plants and animals that can live in a certain area because it determines the availability of water, nutrients, and temperature that the organisms need to survive. For example, polar bears live in the Arctic tundra because they are adapted to the cold climate. Human settlement in the Arctic tundra is limited by geological factors, such as the presence of permafrost and the lack of soil for agriculture. The vast array of plant and animal species is due to the different climates around the world.
