Coelomates are a classification of animals that are characterized by the presence of a body cavity called a coelom. This coelom serves as a space for the digestion and circulation of nutrients, as well as for the storage of waste products. Coelomates are found in the phyla of animals such as annelids, mollusks, arthropods, and chordates. The coelom is a fluid-filled cavity that is lined by a membrane that secretes a fluid called coelomic fluid which helps to regulate the body temperature and keeps the internal organs in place. This fluid also acts as a shock absorber, providing protection from sudden impacts or changes in the environment. The classification of coelomates has been known since the 19th century, when the biologist Richard Owen first identified the presence of a body cavity in these animals (Eisenman, 2016).
