Cyberspace Organizations: UN and ICANN’s Role

Cyberspace: The role of ICANN and UN Organizations, such as the United Nations and Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, play a key part in managing and governing the cyberspace. It is responsible for international cyber activity regulation and innovation. The UN Institute for Disarmament Research, which it owns, has made efforts to improve the ability of its member countries to respond and mitigate security risks related to using the Internet. (Vardalas 2016). ICANN manages coordination activities in relation to assigning names and numbers for the identification of computer networks and maintains the Internet’s security (Kaufman 2021).  Both ICANN (UN) and ICANN seek international collaboration to solve the cyberspace challenges that face both regional and global regions. Escalona (2018) stated that UN representatives were involved in the development of international agreements, such as the Stockholm Declaration. This agreement seeks to increase international cooperation to regulate cyberspace. ICANN works with the UN and other organizations to develop international cooperation and raise awareness around cybersecurity through workshops and activities (Nabar & Baig, 2015). These two organizations are the core of the international network and take all parties into consideration, from governments to civil societies, to help create and implement norms and policies for the internet.  The UN and ICANN are vital in the governance and management of cyberspace.
