St. John’s Wort and Folic Acid Drug Interactions

St. John’swort has been shown to interact with many medications in significant ways. In a 2018 study published in Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, St. John’s wort was found to interact with antidepressants, antiretrovirals and anticoagulants. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Haight et. al., 2018,) can also cause St. John’s wort to reduce oral contraceptives’ effectiveness and increase bleeding risk. Certain medications may also interact with omega-3 fatty acid. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a 2018 review that found omega-3 fatty acid can cause bleeding and interfere with certain anticoagulants (Warfarin, McNamara et. al., 2018). SAM-e is known to interact with some medications such as antidepressants or antipsychotics (De Vry and al., 2018,). Folic acid is known to have very limited drug-drug interactions. Woo and colleagues (2018) published a 2018 review in Drug Safety that found no evidence of significant drug interactions with Folic acid.
