However, it is not without its drawbacks and there are several reasons why it may not be the ideal model organism for genetic studies. First, E. coli is not a vertebrate, which means that it does not possess the same genetic makeup as human beings and other organisms. This can limit the applicability of results obtained from E. coli studies to other organisms (Gibson, 2020). Additionally, because it is a prokaryote, E. coli is not capable of expressing certain types of genes, such as those involved in development and other cellular processes (Gibson, 2020).
