Internet First Edition: Users and the Internet   

The first edition of the Internet was developed by the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (“DARPA”) in 1969. The “ARPANET” version was first developed by the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Programs Agency (“DARPA”) in 1969. This basic internet was used mostly by academics and government researchers to access remote computers, share information and collaborate.(1) ARPANET was used by a wide variety of research facilities and universities, including Stanford Research Institute, the University of California, Santa Barbara, the University of Utah, Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Xerox’s PARC laboratory. (2)   Originally, computers using ARPANET connected using a dial-up telephone line, which was slow and cumbersome. It meant the network had a limited number of users. The internet was made possible by rapid technological advancements and widespread use.  In the US, the widespread commercial use of internet technology was well-established by the mid-1990s. It had already become a commonplace for businesses and homes.  Therefore, academicians and researchers at research centers and universities were the primary users of the initial edition of the internet.   (1)Cavalcanti, G., 2021.
