Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History Podcast explores truth and how we tell stories. This episode explores the history of the Civil Rights Struggle symbol in Birmingham, Alabama. The movie’s name is “The Foot Soldier of Birmingham”; it shows a white officer unleashing a wolflike creature upon a young unarmed demonstrator (Ryan 2017). Ronald McDowell was the artist who created this sculpture, based upon a Bill Hudson photograph taken at a Birmingham demonstration in 1963. It demonstrates the extreme racial injustice of the American South in an egregious and sad way (Ryan 2017). It is difficult to believe that this sculpture depicts an actual event. This is a mild way of saying that it does not seem to have happened in this sense. Gladwell starts with Walter Gadsden the young man seen. It was clear to his horror that he wasn’t enthusiastic about the civil rights movement. (Gladwell, 2022). He was not loyal to the cause of civil rights and had never been interested in it.
