Prompt: Based on what you know about amino acids, if humans were to travel to other planets that had life forms on them, could we sustain ourselves on their food? Provide an explanation for your conclusion.

Peer response: Amino acids are the basic building elements of all terrestrial life. The dispersion of extraterrestrial amino acids has been thoroughly researched using carbonaceous chondrites. The most chemically ancient meteorites possess volatile compounds such as organic debris and water, especially the Murchison meteorite. The biology on Earth is the product of a series of random events that could have gone in a different direction. Life on another planet could use a completely new collection of amino acids. Life there may lack some amino acids or may include those that are toxic to humans. Sugars that are optical isomers of the ones we utilize on Earth may exist (Furukawa, et al., 2019). Optical isomers are compounds with the same molecular structure as one another but mirror reflections of each other. One optical isomer has evolved to be used by life on Earth, but humans cannot metabolize the other. If humans traveled to other planets with life forms, they wouldnt be able to sustain themselves in their current state, which would result in a massive human extinction. Most individuals cannot digest the S-isomer of amino acids and cannot manufacture several of their own. Amino acids found on distant planets would be substantially different from those found on Earth. Allo-isothreonine identified in the Murchison meteorite is an amino acid with a longer carbon chain than other amino acids and does not adequately fit into many proteins. It is unlikely that any isomer of isothreonine will be helpful to the human body (Koga, et al., 2017). Only a few humans will be able to survive on these rare amino acids. They will be equipped with the enzymes required to transform these alien amino acids into viable human amino acids.
